How to Choose the Right Word for Every Action
UX Tip | UX Writing
Using the same terms for the same actions builds user confidence and speed. If you need help deciding on the best word to use in a specific interaction, try checking the IDS word list. There are explanations for 60+ commonly used words with spelling and styling tips.
For example, use “apply” for temporary changes that take effect immediately, like filters. But if the user’s action is final? Then “submit” is the better, more decisive word to use for completing a workflow.
By aligning our terminology, we create a more intuitive experience where users can focus on their tasks rather than deciphering the interface. If you have a question about a specific word, or would like to suggest a new word for us to include, send us a message in the UI-UX Design channel in the IDS forum in Microsoft Teams.
