Essentials for Enhancing UX Writing

UX Tip | UX Writing

Using the right words throughout a user interface is vital to improving the overall user experience. Good UX writing can boost clarity, consistency, and—most important—the user’s confidence. Here are 3 ways to write helpful and impactful words, phrases, and sentences that guide users as they move through interactions and workflows.

Don’t

1.) Capitalization can drive the user’s attention. For most interface elements, capitalize only the first word and any proper nouns. This style is called sentence case—it’s more approachable and easier to read.

2.) The most effective buttons have action-oriented words. Use verbs (“Submit”, “Delete”) or verb-noun pairs (“Create folder”, “Download report”). Choose guiding phrases (“Yes, leave”, “No, go back”).

3.) Use active voice when the user needs to do something. In this type of sentence structure, the subject is doing the action, which will make your writing clearer, more direct, and sound like everyday conversation.
